Dear Cary,

I really liked your stories in The Seven Days of Becky Lynn. I especially enjoyed An Unhappy Day, when Becky Lynn took over the story. Would you write just one more chapter where Becky Lynn escapes from the story and comes to my birthday party? It would be so much fun if she could be there!

I am sorry, but an author cannot write a character out of a story, since anything he writes is just more storyline. But once a story is set free by its author, and placed in the hands of its readers, the characters can occasionally be found at large. Joseph K. is employed by the Department of Motor Vehicles, Ophelia and Little Bo Peep both work at a budget-priced clothing outlet, Dr. Faustus has been seen browsing the nostalgia section at secondhand bookstores, and Vladimir and Estragon have long held seats in congress.
